Patchwork for Beginners: Disappearing Nine Patch, or Traditional Nine Patch, Quilt
A new beginner’s course for those wanting to learn patchwork and quilting will start at The Corner Patch in May 2025; you can choose to attend on either a Thursday or a Saturday.
Once a month over five months you will attend a half-day (10am – 2pm) taught class designed especially for those new to patchworking. Each month you will introduced to the next stage in the process of making a quilt. You will have 4 hours to practise the technique and continue at home, returning the following month to move to the next stage.
Over the course of five months you will learn all the necessary techniques, practise your new skills and end with a beautiful quilt.
Session 1 will cover choosing and preparing fabric, cutting and piecing to form the traditional Nine-Patch blocks.
In Session 2 you will design your layout, assemble your blocks and add sashing between the blocks.
In Session 3 you will complete your quilt top by adding a flange and borders – or you may wish to add multiple borders!and
in Session 4 it is time to choose fabric for your backing, and choose your wadding from the many different types available. We will discuss the pros and cons of each one so you can make an informed choice. We will spend the session getting the quilts ‘sandwiched’, and you will begin to quilt using a walking foot. We will discuss the different ways in which you may like to stitch your quilting – each one will give a different look to the finished quilt. You will return for
Session 5, the last of the monthly sessions, will be when you finish your quilt, attach the binding and tie in the threads.
And, of course, show off your beautiful quilt and pose for photos!
